The formula

  • Marketplace fees = sale price × fee rate.
  • Net after fees = sale price − fees − shipping.
  • Profit = net after fees − purchase cost − repair cost − other costs.
  • Margin = profit ÷ sale price. Return on cost = profit ÷ your costs.
  • Break-even sale price = (costs + shipping) ÷ (1 − fee rate).

Net after fees and profit are deliberately shown separately. Net after fees tells you what the marketplace pays out; profit tells you whether the flip was worth doing. Sellers who track only the payout tend to believe low-margin items are performing better than they are.

Calculator questions

What is net after fees?

Sale price minus marketplace fees and shipping — the money that actually reaches you before your own costs. It is separate from profit, which also subtracts what the item cost you to buy and repair.

How do I work out profit on a resold tool?

Profit = sale price − selling fees − shipping − other expenses − purchase cost − repair cost. For example a $75 sale with $7 fees, $8 shipping and a $40 purchase cost gives $60 net after fees and $20 profit.

What is my break-even sale price?

The lowest price you can accept without losing money: your costs plus shipping, divided by one minus the fee rate. Knowing it before you negotiate stops a quick sale from becoming a loss.

How much should I pay for a tool to resell?

At most your net after fees minus repair and other costs — that is your break-even purchase price. Subtract the profit you want from that figure and you have a firm ceiling to buy under.
